THE PRACTICE OF RADIO AND TELEVISION INTERPRETING IN CAMEROON

ABSTRACT

This paper sets out to depict the practice of radio and television interpreting in Cameroon. Its key objective is to analyse and discuss the practice of this type of interpreting in the country. To achieve its set goal, data were collected from two primary sources: media interpreted audio messages and media interpreted video messages, both broadcast over radio and television channels in Cameroon. From the two sources, 100 excerpts were selected for analysis. A 13-point grid was then employed in the analysis of the collected data. When these media interpreted excerpts were transcribed and analysed, five main findings were arrived at: occurrences of reported discourse, cases of foreignised discourse, frequent use of deceptive cognates, less cumbersomeness of semi-consecutive and non- applicability of analysis criteria to most voice-over media interpreted excerpts. From these findings, it is believed a lot still needs to be done in order to improve on the practice of radio and television interpreting in Cameroon.
