SPACE OF CONFRONTATION AND RESISTANCE IN ‘YOUR FIGHT, BLACK WOMAN’, BY KATENDE KATSH M’BIKA
Author: Raison Kabenge Raison
ABSTRACT
A greedy father, Mutoke Mwewa Lubundu, decides to end his daughter Kabibi Bwalya’s studies in order to marry her off to Munga, a wealthy local polygamist. The father sees women solely through three functions: lover, courtesan, or mother. Hence the conflict. The two sides-traditional and modern-are opposed. They are poles apart. They are not on the same wavelength. Their interests are divided. They do not speak the same language at all. The defense of tradition is embodied by Kabibi’s father and mother. The maintenance of tradition clashes with a progressive vision of the image of women in society. Kabibi Bwalya views the future with a critical eye. Facing her parents’ veto, she defends herself, presents arguments, and confides in her beloved mother.
